How Cleanliness Can Affect Your Mental Health

Did you know that the cleanliness of your environment can affect your mood and mental health? From your workspace to your home, having a tidy space can lift your mood and make you focus more. We at Eco-Clean & Maintenance have gathered a few facts together to show why it is important to keep all of your spaces clean.

Having a cluttered space can have many effects on your mental health and how you work. It is known that clutter in our homes can result in feelings of tension and uncertainty. There was a study in 2010 by researchers at the University of California; they analyzed how 30 couples talked about their homes. The couples who described their homes as "cluttered" or full of "unfinished projects" were more likely to suffer from depression and fatigue than those who described their living space as "restful" and "restorative". They also found that those who live in cluttered environments displayed higher levels of the stress hormone: cortisol. Furthermore, there was a study done by researchers at Princeton University in 2011; they concluded a cluttered environment makes it more difficult to focus on a take as we can get overwhelmed and distracted by clutter.

No wonder decluttering your space can improve your focus and your mental wellbeing! While we are cleaning it helps us gain a sense of control over our environment with satisfaction after cleaning. A 2014 study published a journal by Mindfulness have found the participants who "mindfully" wash up reported a 27% reduction in nervousness and a 25% improvement in "mental inspiration". This is something to think about how we approach tidying up; if we do take a different method it shows how it can benefit our mental health.

We must keep our environments clean as more people are now working from home because of Covid-19. There are even more distractions; we need to make sure clutter is not one of them.
